PHARR, TX ---- The Pharr Community Theater (PCT) invites Rio Grande Valley families and children of all ages to "THE LIFE AND TIMES OF JUANITO GONZALEZ, written, directed, and performed by actor Pedro Garcia.

"The Life and Times of Juanito Gonzalez" by Pedro Garcia explores the importance of education, love & life. The play is set on Día de Muertos and is geared toward school children & youth with a clear and positive message that says, “reading and writing and paying attention to your teachers is important.”

Meet Juanito Gonzalez, who lived to be 100 years old, when he returns to his campo santo (cemetery) pulling an old sack of books. The magical sack contains all the books he read in his life. Today his relatives will re-live fond memories of him. Watch him jubilantly tell his story from childhood and all throughout his magnificent life! It will make you laugh, smile, cry a bit and most of all have a positive outlook on life!

Before they arrive, he will tell the audience why he lived such a wonderful and beautiful life. Briefly, he explains the true meaning of this special day, Nov 2nd, Día de Los Muertos. (Day of the Dead) that is celebrated all over Latin America. This topic is not scary at all. On the contrary, it enlightens! Then Juanito begins to tell his life story as he cheerfully says, “Part of the reason I lived such a wonderful life when I was alive was because when I was a little boy, I used to like to read and write and pay attention to my teachers, bleachers.” He also rhymes-dimes.

At the beginning of the play the magical powers of the twinkling sky turn Juanito into a jubilant, young man again. He takes you through a journey of his childhood as he rides his bike and fishes on the most famous river in the world, the Rio Grande! Watch him as he learns all the good manners his parents taught him. See him dance and sing! Meet his little dog and see how as an adolescent he worked in the harvest fields as to help his family make ends meet, while never lagging in his studies at school. He then graduates from high school and goes to college to become a schoolteacher, where he meets and marries his one and only true love, Rosita. Together, they raise a great family!

Pedro Garcia brings Juanito Gonzalez to life with superb timing and charisma. His endless energy and excellent storytelling technique will enchant you and have you laughing and smiling. “This is a wonderful story of life and education,” said Linda Ulibarri from the South Broadway Cultural Center in Albuquerque, “What a great message for the children.” Audiences will love and appreciate this play. “His performance as Juanito Gonzalez is brilliant,” says Antonio Villeda, an attorney from McAllen, Texas.
